Short answer: a single power strip surge protector is not enough for an automated home. Houston's severe thunderstorm season and grid-switching surges put every networked device, processor, and panel at risk, and the right protection is layered: whole-home protection at the electrical panel, plus dedicated protection for your network and AV equipment.
Why This Matters More Once You've Automated
A home with a TV and a router has a handful of things a surge can damage. A fully automated home has dozens: lighting processors, network switches, access points, cameras, AV receivers, control processors, motorized shade motors — all of it networked, all of it vulnerable to the same event. A surge that used to mean "replace one TV" can now mean a much larger, more disruptive repair bill across a system that took months to design and program correctly.
Houston-Specific Risk
The Gulf Coast sees frequent, often severe thunderstorm activity, particularly through spring and summer, along with the occasional tropical system. Lightning strikes and the power grid switching that happens during storms are two of the most common causes of damaging surges — and neither requires a direct strike on your house. A strike on a nearby line, or the utility company switching between grid segments during a storm, can send a damaging spike through your home's wiring even on a clear day miles from the storm itself.
The Layered Approach
1. Whole-home surge protection at the electrical panel. This is the foundation — a device installed at your main panel (or subpanel) that catches the large-scale surges before they ever reach your outlets. It's the single highest-leverage piece of protection you can add, and it's a relatively small investment relative to what it protects.
2. Point-of-use protection for sensitive equipment. Even with whole-home protection, your automation processors, AV receivers, and network gear benefit from dedicated surge protection at the rack or equipment location — a second layer that catches what gets through, and one that's much easier to inspect and replace than the panel-level unit.
3. Battery backup (UPS) for your network core. A short power blip won't damage most equipment, but it will knock your network offline and can corrupt data on anything mid-write. A UPS on your router, switch, and control processor keeps the brains of the system running through a brief outage — which matters a lot if your security cameras or door locks depend on that network staying up.
4. Grounding, done correctly. Surge protection only works as well as the grounding behind it. This is one area where it's worth having a licensed electrician verify your home's grounding is solid, especially in an older home being retrofitted with new technology.
What Gets Overlooked
The most common mistake we see isn't skipping surge protection entirely — it's assuming a $15 power strip from the hardware store is doing the job. Consumer power strips have a very limited surge-absorption capacity and, in many cases, silently stop protecting anything after their first significant surge event without any indicator that they've failed. A proper installation includes protection sized for what it's actually defending and equipment monitoring/replacement as part of ongoing managed services, not a one-time purchase and forget.
The Bottom Line
The cost of proper surge and lightning protection is a rounding error next to the cost of replacing a control processor, a rack of network gear, or a home theater receiver — let alone the disruption of your whole automation system going dark after a storm.
