Whole-Home Retrofit
Automating an entire existing home — lighting, shades, audio, security, and a unified control system — generally takes two to six weeks from the start of on-site work, depending on the home's size and how much of the work involves fishing wire through existing walls versus relying on wireless. This timeline covers the physical installation and the programming/commissioning that follows, which is its own meaningful phase — a system isn't done when the hardware is mounted, it's done when it's been tuned to how you actually use your home.
What extends this timeline: older homes with harder-to-access wall cavities, larger square footage, and systems that integrate many different subsystems (a golf simulator, a wine room, an extensive outdoor living area) all add time, mostly in the wiring phase.
New Construction
This is the longest timeline, but not because the automation work itself is slow — it's because it happens in coordinated phases alongside the broader construction schedule:
- Design phase (concurrent with architectural planning) — equipment locations, wire counts, and conduit routes get finalized on paper before anything is built.
- Rough-in (during framing, before drywall) — this is when all cabling, speaker wire, and conduit actually get run. It's a matter of days on site, but it has to happen at exactly the right moment in the build.
- Trim/finish (after drywall and paint) — in-wall panels, keypads, speakers, and cameras get mounted.
- Programming and commissioning (near the end of the build) — the system gets configured, tested room by room, and tuned to the finished home.
Total elapsed time tracks the construction project itself, often 6–18 months, but the actual on-site integrator labor within that window is a small fraction of it — the rest is waiting for the house to be ready for the next phase.
